Kuttanad, the 'Rice Bowl of Kerala’, lies at the very heart of the backwaters in Alappuzha district. Its wealth of paddy crops is what got it this unique nickname. Based in the inner regions of the district, it is a huge area of reclaimed land, separated by dikes from water which is higher than it appears.

The Pamba river that winds through Champakulam divides the region into two areas. Both sides of Pamba have verdant paddy fields and coconut palm trees. Another popular attraction in the village of Champakulam is St. Mary’s Forane Church. The church is thought to be constructed way back in 427 AD, and it is known for the mural paintings inside. A different thing that tourists will find enjoyable is the sight of ducks that move over Pamba.
